Classic Wabaso was born in Tema, Ghana, West Africa in 1979. He moved to the UK with his family a year later making Tooting Broadway, South London their new home. Classic Wabaso remains a true South Londoner to this day. However, his Ghanaian roots are ever present in his diverse and eclectic sound; the foundation for his love of music, big beats & drums.
Classic first picked up the decks back in 1997 when his older brother constructed a homemade sound system which they soon put to good use hosting all night House parties. These infamous parties were synonymous with a superior sound, and it was at one of these parties that Classic played his first ever live set.
Classic was born a DJ, showcasing his musicality & dropping large House & Garage beats at venues all over South London. With a growing fan base who loved his unique sound, Classic launched himself into the London Pirate Radio scene starting with a resident slot on House station Supreme 96.1 aka ‘S.Dance’. He soon gathered a hard core contingent of listeners, who tuned in every Sunday to listen to his live shows.
It was through the London pirate radio scene that Classic embarked on his first big label project with Def Jam, collaborating with their first UK signing, the artist Aaron Soul. Classic went on to become Aaron Soul’s exclusive tour DJ, and was soon supporting Aaron to the now legendary and Iconic UK professional studios making sounds with the likes of ‘Soul 2 Soul’ & ‘The Artful Dodger’.
It was during this time that Classic’s love and knowledge for digital composing grew and he opened his first Functional recording studio in Bermondsey South London, 2003. During this period, Classic studied for a degree in ‘Music Production & Sound Design’ at South London’s Soutbank University, graduating with a BA Hons. It was whilst studying here he launched the University’s first ever online digital radio station. With a hunger to play live, he organised tours to Andorra ski resort putting on some serious mountain top parties. Classic would broadcast live from the mountain top for 5 days straight, and then go on to host and DJ at parties throughout the night.
In 2010 Classic became ‘Classic Wabaso’, a Ghanaian term used for “encouragement in a positive manner”. This was in recognition of his Ghanaian roots, his musical roots. Classic Wabaso debuted his new name at the infamous ‘Egg London’ playing alongside the likes of Tom Clark, Jens Bond Alex Bau, Ahmet Sendil.
In 2012 Classic Wabaso launched his own House brand ‘Drop Zone London’. Now known simply as DZ-1 London, the brand was supported by exclusive launch parties all over London with hosted nights at POW Brixton, Egg London’s Apothecary Bar and the now legendary after party at club Aquarium.
